Hi Lauren- I'm about 5'6'', 120 lbs and have been lithing since March 09. I LOVE what Lithe has done to my body in terms of tightening and toning (I've lost about 4 pounds total) and I love the energy and confidence it gives me. The problem-area I can't seem to shake, though, is the cellulite on the backs of my thighs which has been there ever since I was old enough to know what cellulite was.
Is it true that there's really nothing a girl can do about cellulite?? I hope your answer is no, and if it is, I would love to hear any suggestions you might have on what might make a difference. Thank you for your help! "L"
Hey L! Thanks for writing! Well, I so wish that I could definitively say YES, but cellulite is mostly related on how you rolled the dice genetically. Even super thin and super fit women have it. You're really lean, so I'm not going to tell you to lose more weight. For me personally, Lithing, slightly tanned skin (real or fake) and taking off the last five pounds takes those dreaded lumps away completely.
That said, there are a few strategies that will help. The first is to shrink your fat cells. Cellulite is essentially the appearance of fat underneath your skin. It “shows” because fat cells are round, so they will always look somewhat bumpy when visible, even when they’re small. Some ladies are lucky enough to have a thick layer of connective tissue covering the fat, which masks the bumps, while others have a wimpy layer that reveals them (this explains why even heavier men rarely have "cottage cheese" legs when they sit down -- guys have thicker tissue, so unfair!).
As fat cells grow in size, the width of the "valley" between the bumps expands (think of the surface atop a layer of loose grapes -- now imagine they’re apricots). You’re basically stuck with the type of connective tissue you were born with, but shrinking your fat cells via diet and exercise can lessen the severity of cellulite big time.
Strategy number two: Stay hydrated. Some experts believe that plump, well-hydrated skin can camouflage the appearance of cellulite (it could also be that dehydrated skin worsens it). In either case, aiming for about eight 8-ounce cups of water each day isn’t a bad idea.
Finally, eat skin-friendly foods. Skin takes a lot of wear and tear, and cells slough off constantly. You’re continuously repairing skin cells and regenerating new ones. And like every cell in your body, your skin is knitted from the nutrients you eat.
Keep it in tip-top shape by choosing foods filled with the vitamins and minerals that “do the job” -- almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and avocados (for healthy fats and vitamin E), citrus fruits, peppers, tomatoes, and strawberries (rich in vitamin C), carrots, spinach, cantaloupe, apricots, papaya, and mango (for vitamin A), beans and lentils (for protein), and water-rich produce like melon, grapes, greens, and cucumbers for fluid.
Simple skin-nourishing dishes include: a taco salad made with greens, black beans, salsa, peppers, and avocado; spinach salad tossed with strawberries and walnuts; fruit salad sprinkled with slivered almonds; and lentil soup alongside a garden salad topped with carrots, cucumbers, and sunflower seeds -- Yummy!

If none of these strategies work, try to focus on loving your body despite its lumps and bumps. As cheesy (no pun intended) as it sounds, I do recommend writing a love letter to your body once in a while. Thank it for all the things it can do that have absolutely nothing to do with the way you look -- When you really sit down and focus on this question, you may be amazed at what you think of!

Ladies, we all have an affinity for sweets, snacks and everything in between. I mean, staying light on your toes has never truly been easy for any of us over the age of 30.
I was in line at milkcrate cafe this am and as I listened to two women chatting it up about muffins being a "healthy snack alternative" and in the same breath complaining about the all too tight fit of their skinny jeans and low energy days. I did bite my tongue--Hard.
Please know that the average store bought muffin is just a handsomely packaged hunk of cake--Not really the smartest way to start the day.

Because Lithe isn't a "drop in" studio, all new clients are required to take the Immersion, one (or a few) Lithe 101 classes, or a private session before entering regular level classes.
Many people cannot take the 8 PM Immersion for whatever reason, but so many of you are pulling out all the stops, re-arranging schedules and asking hubby's, babysitters and doggy-daycare to deal with the kids for an hour so you can get started and on schedule at a time that works for you.
I really like the newbie dedication and commitment that I've been seeing around the studios lately. Many people are taking the 101 classes and/or private lessons and then are diving right into regular classes and they are doing just fine and dandy.
It's so cool to see and I'm impressed and proud. Congrats!

Um, sorry for the Monday blog delay...I'm still kinda recovering.
On Saturday, the fabulous four (Carrie, my mom, Mary, my future sister in law, Laurie, and Jordan's mom, Sandy) threw Jordan and I an unbelievable "Jack & Jill" shower at our place in Fishtown.
There were no games or funny hats AND I didn't even have to open gifts in front of people for hours (thank you!) but there WAS a high-octane party, a great crowd, perfect music, really fantastic food and oodles of champagne. I loved every minute of it.
For us, the shower was really more like our wedding, since our November 7th nuptials in the Dominican will be a super intimate affair, with less than 50 people attending. We had about 100 close friends and family show up and what a fantastic late-night event it was--One that I'll always remember.
I highly recommend our caterer, Chef Rob Mockus of Higher Catering and Adam (B5) of milkcrate cafe for mixing some awesome tunes here and in the DR. Thanks to all!
