LITHE BRIDE! / DEAR LITHE {LOVE LETTERS} 19 Apr 2012

Lithe Bride, Melissa Brooks

Dear Lithe,

This is a Lithe love letter that is way overdue.  As I sit down to write this, I feel like i'm writing a letter to an old boyfriend who still holds a healthy spot in my heart. I was a Lithe-er for almost a year when I lived in Philadelphia, and had heard of Lithe from a friend of mine in Boston. She insisted that Lithe was right up my alley, and swore "would change my life."  She was exactly right.

I was a soccer player and college runner who always was stringy and strong -- Lithe, really. Until I went through residency and fellowship, when 80+ hour work weeks really took a toll on my body and willingness to workout.  I came to Philly soft, tired, and down in the dumps about lacing up running shoes to earn my body back.  I also got engaged and really wanted to get things back in order before I graduated, started my real job, got married, and moved home to Denver. I started the immersion and actually noticed a change right away.  I had more energy, everything was tighter, and I loved the women I met at Lithe. We all had our individual story, but we were united by the fact that we loved feeling good, working out, and derived energy and a sense of accomplishment from strong women around us. Importantly, we also bonded over our real lives outside of the studio.  I saw immediate results with improved muscle tone, melting fat, and an amazing sense of endorphin happiness when I left the studio after each workout.  Even after a 12+ hour day, Lithe stuck with me.

When my fiancé had to leave Philadelphia unexpectedly for his job, Lithe became my staple and daily routine. Even with the heartache that came with doing long distance, Lithe was my rock. There is no way to describe how the studio, Mary, Lauren, and all the Lithe girls smoothed out that tumultuous time!

Lithe worked magic on my body, but after 4 hard months of work I hit a plateau. By February, I was frustrated at Lithing 6 days a week and not seeing any more change. I asked the girls for advice.  Immediately everyone answered -- change the way you look at food. Change the way you eat. Change the way you drink. Try a detox, hit the reset button for your body, and eat the way you work out.  Eat cleanly.  Eat raw. Drink water.  "Lithe" your lifestyle.  So I did. And boy, were they right. This was just as Lithe foods were coming onto the scene, so we all figured out ways to eat and drink Lithe on our own and with the help of delicious Lithe Foods and drinking juice. I hit a level of tone and lithe-ness I didn't think would be possible at age 31.  I felt better than when I was running 80 miles a week in college. And I looked better too!

I left Philadelphia to move to Denver last July 1st, very excited for our July 9th wedding.  And heartbroken.  I cried on the airplane knowing I was leaving Lithe and didn't know how I would find a replacement.  Sounds silly but it’s totally true. Just ask the poor guy sitting next to me!

Since I left Lithe I have yet to find a replacement. I have contemplated flying back to Philadelphia just to come to Rittenhouse for a Fri-Sat-Sun three class mini retreat. I have begged Lauren to open a studio in Denver (any takers?!?!). In the meantime, I am counting the days until Lithe starts streaming. Thank you for Lithe for providing a place where energetic, successful women come to get in shape. Thank you to Lauren, Anne, Melissa, Liz, Elizabeth, Mary for teaching me and motivating me to get Lithe. You really have changed my life.

LITHE FOODS ON FACEBOOK! 18 Apr 2012

Foods

Lithe is a lifestyle, not just a workout and eating right is a key ingredient in our "fit, hip, healthy" mantra.  This month marks our one year anniversary and we thought it was high time to honor the "healthy" component of Lithe with Lithe Foods very own Facebook Page!

"Like" Lithe Foods on Facebook to get the inside scoop on new A La Carte items, Detox Plan information, nutrition facts, tips, recipes, what foods pair perfectly with your favorite workouts and exclusive fan savings!  It's also a great place to post your Lithe Foods feedback, see what other Lithers' are loving, and get answers to all your "healthy"-related questions.  See you there!

SHANNON GRAHAM. 18 Apr 2012

Shan

From: Middletown, Pennsylvania (anyone old enough to remember Three Mile Island?)

Favorite City: NYC

Enjoys: Traveling, the beach, vacations with my family, wine, cooking for friends, finding new healthy recipes, Lithing, running, golfing, and shopping.

Favorite Lithe Exercise: Jumping lunges - I'm a cardio junkie so I love how quickly they raise your heart rate while at the same time do some serious sculpting.

Other Job: Leads Federal Alliance Development for a health care trade association

How'd she land a spot on the Lithe team?  Shannon caught my eye the first time she took one of my classes and then I got to know her better at Camp Lithe. She has incredible strength and perfect form, she's positive, powerful, fun, friendly and just adores Lithe.  I just love her spirit.  The one thing that blows me away is how committed she is.  She is a woman after my own heart.  During Instructor Training, she took a new job opportunity in DC. Instead of walking away from Lithe, she took the train up every Wednesday night after work (late), trained until 10PM and then traveled back to DC in the wee hours of the morning. I know that everyone will love taking her classes. You'll be able to catch her on the weekends in Philly!

What you wouldn't know just by looking at her: I'm 37 years old, I live in DC during the week and spend most of my weekends in Philly.  I have a sweet little Maltese named Daisy. I'm the oldest of three. My brother and his new bride live in the city, and my sister, her husband and the love of my life, my niece Chloe live in Hershey, PA.  I graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in Political Science. Years ago I was Spinning and a Pilates instructor. I ran the Philly Marathon in 1999, and I placed second in my age group in my first (and so far only) triathlon.  I have a wicked sweet tooth and live for Sunday brunch with my girlfriends.

25 THINGS {BY SAYEH}! 18 Apr 2012

 Anna

25 Things! Anna Di Gregorio

Anna has been a devoted Lither since she started taking classes in September 2011. Not one to take it slow, she immediately challenged herself to a 12-week, 6-days-a-week, Lithe commitment which she recently completed on April 10th. As a result, Anna’s body has changed immensely, and she’s never felt stronger or more appreciative of it. In this first 25 Things profile of a Lithe client, Anna shares a little more about herself.

  1. I’m the oldest of 3 girls. We’re the first generation born in the US. Both my parents are from Italy, and the rest of my extended family still lives there.
  2. With my background comes mad skills in the kitchen. In my family, we make our own tomato sauce (not gravy! gravy is brown and you put it on turkey), homemade wine, and sausage.
  3. Italian was my first language.
  4. When I eat chocolate, Hershey Kisses (Special Dark), I have to eat them in 3’s. The first one I shove in my mouth because I just can’t wait to eat it, the 2nd one I actually taste, and the 3rd I really savor.
  5. I’m known for saying, “That’s Absurd!”
  6. I’m the Director of Marketing for the concessions program (Philadelphia Marketplace Food & Shops) at the Philadelphia International Airport, although I love fashion and hope to one day own a clothing boutique.
  7. I’m a freak over chapstick--I have to have 3 at all times--one in my purse, one by my bed (on my nightstand, to put on before I go to sleep), and one in my car.
  8. I’ve always wanted to go to Fiji and hike the rainforest. I love to travel and would love to have a job for the Travel Channel so I can visit amazing places and get paid for it!
  9. Committed to the Lithe philosophy of being healthy inside and out, I try REALLY hard to eat healthy most of the time, but I do cheat. I have a weakness for french fries, especially from Chick-Fil-A.
  10. I have a fear of suffocation/drowning. I think it would be one of the worst ways to die.
  11. One word to define me= reliable
  12. I only play the mega millions once the jackpot hits at least $100 million; otherwise, it’s just not worth it!
  13. I love to drive fast. I’m always in the left lane and if you’re not going 80+, you should get out of my way.
  14. I love to laugh at people falling down (I know that sounds mean!) Sometimes, I YouTube videos of people falling down to get my fix.
  15. My biggest pet peeve is when people don’t follow up or return your phone call/text.
  16. One of my favorite foods is sushi. I can out eat everyone at the table, which makes me think I could enter some type of eating contest.
  17. I hate being late. I’m always either on-time or 5 min early.
  18. I really want to learn how to cook Asian Cuisine.
  19. I hate watching scary movies where people are brutally murdered or hurt. It makes me so paranoid that the same things will happen to me.
  20. I love a clean house, but cleaning puts me in a terrible mood.
  21. I over think and over analyze almost everything, including writing 25 things about myself. It gives me gray hair.
  22. I’m always wearing my sunglasses (outside/driving/even if it’s cloudy). So much so, that my sisters have nicknamed me Bono.
  23. I have the best neighbors! They are ancient, old and dead. I live across the street from the oldest cemetery in Philadelphia.
  24. I have a love for birds and antique birdcages. I think it’s the idea of flight or being free that attracts me to them.
  25. I’m the Lithe publicist Lauren has no idea she hired. Everyday, on the streets of Philadelphia, I tell anyone and everyone who will listen about Lithe. Sumos, liberties, bands, method breathing…

I couldn’t agree more about the gravy thing. Where I come from, gravy is brown (or white). When I first moved to Philadelphia and was asked if I wanted gravy on my spaghetti, I was utterly confused (but also slightly intrigued as gravy does make everything better). Also, I may have to challenge Anna to a sushi eat-off. If it’s wrapped in seaweed, and put it in front of me, I will eat it. And although, I can’t understand her fascination with birds (those beady-eyed creatures just creep me out), I certainly get her obsession with Lithe Method. Anna is the paragon of Lithe commitment. A self-imposed 12-week challenge, at 6 days each week?? I did 4 weeks at 5 times a week, and I thought I was cool. Hats off to you lady!

See you in class!

ME ON MONDAY {LOFT FOR SALE}. 16 Apr 2012

Thanksgiving 2011

My house is for sale.  I'm not a very sentimental person but I find myself having a hard time letting go of this place.  I'll give you some back-story. Jordan and I were dating for about six months and he had asked me to move in with him but I declined (been there, done that).  I was determined to live alone in the loft district (despite everyone else in my family absolutely hating the idea) and open Lithe Rittenhouse.

I moved into my great space above Cafe Lift, opened Lithe Rittenhouse and then was broke as a joke. I can still remember the incredible stress of having two studios, no money and searching for change in the floorboards of my Mariner. And that was the year that the economy really tanked.  My lovely realtor allowed me to exit out of my lease and then I (with a face full of tears) asked Jordan if I could move in with him until I got back on my feet.  He had just purchased this lovely, unique loft in Fishtown/Northern Liberties.

Fast-forward six years and I can't believe that we are outgrowing this special space. So many memories were made here:  Jordan proposed to me in the kitchen, We've met some of our best friends here, our Shower, Lithe Instructor parties, Marriage, Mars, and every Thanksgiving for the last six years.

Not only is the house massive and stunning, but it's in a great location.  I could live here forever.  Honestly, the only reason we're leaving is because of Mars.

Mr. Mars needs an enclosed bedroom because we want to party/work/live after 6:30 PM. Whoever ends up buying this place is in for a real treat.  Where are we headed?  We're definitely staying in the city.  Maybe I'll be neighbors with one of you. Do you all love your current neighborhood? Where should we look?
