FALL RECOVERY SMOOTHIE! 23 Sep 2012
Fall in a bottle is back! This smoothie fills you up for HOURS with it's high fiber content due to the beautiful pumpkin. The pulp and seeds of a pumpkin are considered super foods because of their excellent health benefits. A cup of raw pumpkin contains only 30-45 calories, no fat or cholesterol, 1 g of dietary fiber and no more than 8 g of carbohydrates. The pulp also contains many minerals and vitamins such as A, B-6, C and E. Banana adds potassium and the addition of flax seeds (one of the most powerful plant foods on the planet) provides:
- Omega-3 essential fatty acids, "good" fats that have been shown to have heart-healthy effects. Each tablespoon of ground flax seed contains about 1.8 grams of plant omega-3s.
- Lignans, which have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities. Flax seed contains 75-800 times more lignans than other plant foods.
- Fiber. Flax seed contains both the soluble and insoluble types.
Want another reason to drink up? Recent studies have suggested that flax seed may have a protective effect against cancer, particularly breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. Ingredients: Banana, Pumpkin, Fresh-Pressed Apple juice, Flax Seed, Cinnamon, Nutmeg & a touch of Agave Price: $7

I'm sipping this delicious smoothie right now- but I'm concerned with the high calories and sugar with relatively low protein. Sure, it's agave and fruit, but sugar is sugar... Maybe I'm missing something? But it sure is yummy!

Hi M, love that you love it! Our seasonal recovery smoothies are not high-protein “recovery” smoothies that you may associate with weight lifting recovery drinks/shakes. They are made to help your body power through your day with vitamins and minerals that are specific to the season. Think of them as local (minus the banana), seasonal treats that tantalize your taste buds and power your Lithe workouts.
Not all sugars are created equal, but I fully believe that carbohydrates are not the enemy. We need healthy carbs. These natural sugars are good, healthy, lower-glycemic sugars… apples, banana, and just a touch of agave. More info on that here: http://www.fithiphealthy.com/fithiphealthy/2011/07/lithe-tv.html
The pumpkin also adds a great amount of fiber to keep you full longer and stretch those calories.
I believe that no one food in and of itself is “bad” and Lithe Foods is not a diet. The nutritional benefits far outweigh the “high” calories and protein to carb ratio. Hope this helps!
