You know that breathing serves as the foundation of your practice in each Lithe workout, helping you power through all 30 reps. But have you considered applications for your Lithe Breath outside of the studio? As the holidays approach and the days become shorter, try to incorporate these tips into your daily routine.

1. Good Morning, Sunshine: It's dark when your alarm goes off. You just know the floorboards will be freezing beneath your toes. And staying in bed sounds better than pretty much anything else at that moment. Before throwing off your covers, try bringing your hands to your rib cage and inhale deeply through your nose expanding your ribs laterally, then exhale like you're breathing through a straw knitting your ribs back together. Aim for five to ten full breaths this way each morning to help start your day on a positive note.

2. Reduce Stress at Work: December brings a unique set of extracurricular activities: shopping for the perfect gift, Ugly Sweater parties, solo viewings of Love Actually. Try telling that to the boss who emails you three minutes before the end of your work day about an urgent project that has to be done, like, YESTERDAY. When an unexpected stressor pops up, your sympathetic nervous system naturally kicks into fight-or-flight mode, your cortisol levels spike, and your breathing naturally becomes shallower. Take one full minute to stand up from your desk, shake out your limbs (maybe a mini-crazy arm series?), and breathe with intention in order to activate your parasympathetic nervous system, reversing the natural stress response so you can tackle work with a calm approach. Colin Firth and Liam Neeson will wait.

3. A Stealthy Commute Workout: When traffic is at a standstill during your commute, it's time for a stealthy ab workout to pass the time. The guy in the next lane may look at your pursed lips strangely, but we all know he was just singing along to Justin Bieber so he really can't pass judgment. Put on your favorite song and try to execute perfect inhales and exhales for the entire song. Alternate working in neutral for 10 breaths, then imprint for the next 10 to really engage your abs. You'll be surprised how effective this is.
4. Childbirth! Ok so this one won't be part of your daily routine, but talk to any Lithe Mama and she'll tell you what's up. Breathing in a steady pattern during labor is helpful for pain management, keeping as calm as possible, providing a sense of control, and most importantly for pushing like crazy. Bonus: a strong pelvic floor helps reduce incontinence after birth too!
Have you used Lithe's breathing techniques in other areas of your life? Let us know in the comments!

What brought you to Lithe in the first place? I started coming to Lithe after participating in Lauren's LB Active #buildapeach challenge. I loved the daily moves Lauren presented and the community of women was amazing, so I thought this can only be better in studio. I took Immersion in December of 2015 and have been Lithing consistently ever since. I loved the whole idea of Cardio Cheer Sculpting as I had done ballet from ages 3-18, and loved some of the dance-y aspects of it and the sculpting at the barre, but oh my god in the beginning I had no idea how I was going to make it through class. It really challenged me in a new way.

What motivates you to stay consistent with Lithing? Lithing has done wonders for my body and mind and that's what makes it easy for my to stay consistent. It is now just a part of my daily routine. Lithing really helped me through a tough break-up and the hour spent in the studio really allows me to not think about outside stuff, I just focus on nailing the choreography or my form at the barre and try and push myself a little harder each class. That is probably the biggest reason why I go daily. Then, of course there are the amazing results. I love being able to feel confident in a form fitting sheath dress or a pair of skinny jeans and not have to worry about sucking it in.

What do you do to de-stress on the weekends? Lithe is my #1 de-stresser, but I also like to watch mindless TV or have a glass of wine. Going out with friends and trying new restaurants or bars is another way I keep balance in my life and try to keep myself as stress free as possible.

What is the most rewarding aspect of Lithe to you? The most rewarding aspect of Lithe is the amazing community of women I get to see every day. Yes, the classes are amazing and effective, but I enjoy coming to the studio because of the fabulous instructors, front desk staff, and fellow Lithers. It's such a supportive group who encourages and praises each other regularly. Second most rewarding aspect is nailing the CCS sequences! I love when you have a good class where everyone is in sync, it really changes the energy in the studio.

If you were a Lithe move, which would you be and why? If I were a Lithe move, I would be curtsy lunges because on the surface they are not a tricky move, but to do them well you need focus and strength.

Have you met anyone through Lithe that has become a friend, in or out of the studio? I have met a lot of great people at the studio, and I love seeing the 5:45 Main Line ladies in class every day. I also met my friend Emily Risser through Lithe, we've had a lot of fun going out, or just meeting up in class together.

Who is your celebrity crush? My longest celebrity crush has been on Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm talking back to 5th grade when I saw Romeo and Juliet - definitely without permission - at my friend's house. Then it just continued from there, especially after seeing Titanic. I think there's a "my heart will go on" joke in here somewhere.

Try this 10-minute, easy-to-make pumpkin pie alternative that's light (less than 100 calories per serving), delicious, and nutritious.  Everyone in the house will love it!

8 ounces canned pumpkin

1 cup milk of your choice

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

1/4 tsp. cinnamon

1 small package of instant sugar-free vanilla pudding

1 cup whipped cream (optional)

Directions: Combine the pumpkin, milk, and spices in your high speed blender or medium bowl. Blend on low or mix with a spoon until mixture is smooth. Add in the pudding mix and blend on low or beat with an electric blender for 1-2 minutes. Each day, Sunday Breakfast Mission provides three free meals to men, women and children. We are so thankful for you all, and in the spirit of gratitude we hope we can band together from now until Christmas to give back in Philly!

One of my first experiences in Philly, excluding elementary school field trips, was visiting with my fiancé while he interviewed for residency programs. We happened to stay at the Warwick Hotel on 17th Street, right across from Lithe! During our stay we saw a sign for a psychic next to our hotel and decided it would be fun to get a reading together. Although the clairvoyant was quite a character (and had a few insights about us), she was unhelpful with the apartment hunt. What’s funny though, is that we later walked past the building we ultimately live in, and I commented to Grayson, “What a beautiful building- wouldn't it be amazing to live there?" Thanks, psychic!

Since we live near Rittenhouse Square, our dog Loki loves going for walks around the park. She is a Lab/Italian Greyhound mix (that's what they told us when we adopted her) who we adopted at six-months, and we just had our three-year anniversary together! When she came to us her name was Arrow which we thought was cute since she's a crazy fast runner, but as she got more comfortable with us we saw that she was a little imp - incredibly clever but always getting into trouble. The movie Thor had recently come out (and Grayson's mancrush is Chris Hemsworth) so after seeing it we joked that she should be named Loki after the god of mischief and destruction. After some convincing on my part, her nametag was officially changed.

Loki and Grayson, as well as our new dog Lucy, are my family here in Philly but for the holidays I split my time between my family and my fiancé’s family who are both in New Jersey. Luckily each side has their big celebration on different days so we get to see everyone! It works out great because we never have to switch sides or alternate who we see each year.

I find that this busy time of year actually encourages me to set aside time for myself on a more regular basis. With everything that goes on during the holidays I know that if I don't allow myself to rest and recharge I'll never make it through. Most of the time adding an extra workout or two per week helps alleviate stress (not to mention it keeps me in great shape through this delicious season!).

Shoes: Steve Madden

Leggings: Michi NY (solid blue); Old Navy (patterned blue); Nike (black)

Sunglasses: Emilio Pucci (picked out by Grayson!)

What brought you to Lithe in the first place? My friend Stephanie told me about Lithe five years ago. She said she could picture me in each class and LOVING it because I was a dancer and cheerleader in high school. My first class, after Lithe 101 was Weightless, which is a great mix of bands, barre and simple CCS. I was immediately hooked.

What motivates you to stay consistent with Lithing? Lithe is solace for me. I find so much peace when I walk into the elevator, and then out onto the wooden floor, take off my shoes, smell that tea tree oil, and see the logo. There’s never a day I don’t look forward to class. Life has ups and downs, and I either celebrate good fortune on some days by coming to Lithe or get over bad days by leaving everything I have on the mat and I walk out with a smile with my shoulders back and head high.

What do you do to de-stress on the weekends? I love hiking. There’s a different workout in changing elevations and having unpredictable terrain in front of you. I also enjoy finding little boutiques around the city (especially on Third Street after class in OC!). I’m a sucker for a good binge watch - most recently The Crown on Netflix.

What is the most rewarding aspect of Lithe to you? Hands down keeping my arms up for the arm sequence in Skinny Mini and the candlestick series with five-pound weights. I feel like I can do anything when I complete both of those.

If you were a Lithe move, which would you be and why? I look forward to the Full Round Up in Pom. I feel like I’m flying! It’s like you finish the awesome CCS sequence, but then you do this big move and start it all over again. I love when it shows up in Freestyle, too.

What do your friends and/or family think you do when you're at the studio? Have you ever shown them your CCS moves? Most think I’m nuts and part of a cult. But I know they are all a bit jealous that I've found something I love so much. Whenever I’m talking to my mom on my way to or from class, she says, “you’re so good.” They indulge me when I need pictures for challenges, know they can always buy fitness clothes as gifts, and have even attended a class when they are in town.  My sister and I do the arm sequences when we take walks in Florida visiting my grandmother. We’ve done the “at home” sequence on the blog in the backyard and laughed together. Lithe really brings out the best in you.

What is the first concert you went to? I think my dad took me to Jethro Tull. I decided I wanted to play the flute in elementary school after that concert.

Who is/was your celebrity crush? Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto!)

If you were stranded on a desert island, what are the three products you'd need to survive? The Harry Potter series (that counts as one thing, right?), sunnies, and a hammock.
